Kalle Akkerman is a junior at Austin High and he also plays percussion in th Austin Symphony Orchestra. Kalle has been in music all his life, he has been taking piano lessons since he was 5 and he is 17 now. He is one out of a select few Austin youth that plays pipe organ or piano at Austin area churches. Recently Kalle has had his talent recognized, he won the Minnesota Music Teachers Association Youth Artist Organ Competition. This story is what Austin is all about ...... young musicians who play extremely well. Young artists should earn more recognition like Kalle is getting instead of just hearing about older musicians. If you know any young artists post a comment so we can hear about them too.

Monterrey Mexico: the place to be?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/24/arts/music/24monterrey.html?src=me&ref=arts
Hey guys, check out this recent article from the New York Times. It's about MtyMx, a music festival in Monterrey, Mexico, about the rough times and the good times it represents. This got me thinking, what other great music festivals are out there (excluding ACL, SXSW, and Lala Palooza)? It would be cool to catch another great show in the dead season between the two big Austin fests. Reply back if you know of any other great shows to see.
Thanks,
Bass man

Haircuts and music
It has been proven that getting a haircut makes you play more staccato. This study was done by Berklee University and it concluded that the attitude change brought about by the haircut makes you feel peppy, and the jubilant joy that this peppiness brings results in a more staccato playing. Thusly, we do believe that everyone in this school needs a haircut, even if they have recently gotten one. Thank you for your time in listening to this piece.
Just kidding. But seriously, get a haircut you hippies!

The Cactus Café: Should it Stay or Should it go?
The University of Texas has always been the cultural hub of Austin. The shows hosted at various venues around the campus have always been overwhelmingly popular. Now, they have decided to close one of the premier venues: the Cactus Café. Is this the right choice? What does this imply about the university's stance on Austin culture? Read the story in the Spring 2010 issue of The Music is Bach, set to be released in June 2010.
